Since 1979 Franklin Square Gallery has been operated by the nonprofit Associated Artists of Southport. It is housed in an impressive century-old historic building in the heart of Southport directly behind Franklin Square Park. The association is responsible for maintaining and operating the gallery. The city of Southport leases the building and maintains the exterior and the Associated Artists maintain and upgrade the interior and operate the gallery. The mission of AAS is to have the artists create and maintain an important cultural art center and through the many member volunteers, they have. There are workshops, classes, and regional art competitions sponsored by the association. The gallery features the popular First Friday events; the paintings and pottery of members; the annual exhibits of the Oak Island Quilters; the annual Brunswick County Photography Contest, sponsored by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department; and artwork of the students of the Brunswick County Public School System among the special events. All paintings and pottery in the gallery are available for sale to the public. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10-5 from mid February through mid December.
