BEMC is a locally owned not-for-profit corporation committed to providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity to its members. Co-ops are owned by the members they serve and are committed to providing reliable electricity at the lowest price possible. Established in 1939, BEMC has a longstanding tradition of working to improve the quality of life in the communities it serves. Today, BEMC is the second largest electric co-op in NC, the 35th largest of 851 co-ops in the U.S. and serves about 86,000 locations in Brunswick and Columbus counties, plus small areas of Bladen and Robeson counties. Offices are in Supply, Southport/Oak Island and Whiteville, NC.
Electric cooperatives were established to provide electricity to rural America, and now make up the largest electric utility network in the nation. BEMC is affiliated with Touchstone Energy, the national brand identity for that network. The connection with Touchstone Energy® helps BEMC expand its community support activities including educational materials for schools, sports camp scholarships, the Co-op Connections Card discount programs and TOGETHERWESAVE.COM, an interactive website that offers information about how to save energy in your home.
BEMC also offers a wealth of information on energy efficiency as well as Weatherization Loans for residential energy efficiency projects. BEMC’s community efforts include BEMC Community Grants; a Bright Ideas Grant Program for K-12 teachers; a College Scholarship Program for high school seniors and the Warm Homes, Warm Hearts campaign which helps struggling families stay warm during the winter months.
Among other cooperatives, BEMC is seen as a leader for its implementation of new technologies designed to increase efficiency and reliability. These include a high-tech dispatch center and mapping system, the PowerStat prepaid power program, underground electric installation and an Advanced Metering Infrastructure system.
