The heart of Bald Head Island is undoubtedly the Bald Head Island Club's golf course. The course, originally designed by George Cobb and opened for play in 1974, was recently restored by Tim Cate, who breathed new life into the tired layout, making it much more natural looking and challenging. The course is so aesthetically pleasing now that it's almost a completely different course. Much of this course follows the natural terrain carved by wind and water like the first courses in Scotland. Exposed greens on its ocean side contrast sharply with interior holes where palms, maritime forest and natural wildlife habitats surround the holes. Ranked 8th in the state of North Carolina and one of the "best courses you can play" for 2015 by Golfweek Magazine, this 18 hole, par 72 championship course is extremely demanding as much due to the ocean wind as to the late George Cobb's brilliant design and is among the scenic gems on the east coast. A complete practice facility and snack bar are available as well.
