The Southport Sail & Power Squadron (SS&PS), the local chapter of the U.S. Power Squadrons, America's Boating Club, was chartered in January of 2002. SS&PS offers educational programs for safe boating as well as civic service and social activities for its 85 members. Members range from individuals new to boating to those with extensive experience, with some of them possessing captain's licenses that are issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. Introductory level courses taught by squadron members include: America’s Boating Course, Tides and Currents (Southport), Basic Coastal Navigation, Basic Weather and Forecasting and GPS. In-depth courses now open to the public include: Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Weather, Marine Electronics and Engine Maintenance. SS&PS holds free vessel safety inspections for the public and monthly dinner programs with excellent outside speakers.
