Shaded by centuries-old live oaks and aflame with color in spring, this is a park to savor — a place in which to absorb the 'spirit of Old Smithville'. The walls and entrances that make the perimeter of the Grove are constructed of ballast stones. These stones were used in ships for balance, over 100 years ago. Set back among the oaks, the stately Franklin Square Gallery Buiding has had many uses: once a schoolhouse, then City Hall, and today an art gallery. Legend has it that one who drinks from the park’s well will return for another visit to this community.
