In June of 2012, the Fort Johnston-Southport Museum & Visitors’ Center opened its doors in the historic Garrison House, located on the grounds of Fort Johnston. Friendly and knowledgeable volunteers are ready to provide you with the information you need to make Southport your most enjoyable stop. Here you will find free material that includes brochures and maps of fun, interesting, and educational things to do in Southport. The museum portion of the building houses a display that includes information about Fort Johnston, the author, Robert Ruark, a large timeline display, a photographic display of The Way it Was, and an exhibit room of the Southport Historical Society. This room features rotating exhibits, an authentic storefront of Fullwood’s Grocery Store, and the Southport Bicentennial Heritage Quilt. One of the most popular exhibits of the museum is the movie memorabilia room where you will find playbills on the walls from the many films that were made in Southport including Nicholas Sparks’ Safe Haven. Objects on display from Safe Haven include: Katie’s bike, costumes, movie props, the restaurant sign from Ivan’s and the door from Ryan's Port Market. The Southport Historical Society Museum Store features unique T-shirts, and other Southport souvenirs. Admission is free, however, donations are greatly appreciated.
