Visitors to Southport, NC are often seeking seafood and it can be found in most any restaurant here in the form of shrimp, oysters, scallops and all kinds of fish. But locals especially like a change now and then, so you will find most anything you crave from fast food to fine food. Ethnic restaurants include Italian, Thai and Mexican and, of course, you will also find steak, pizza, hot dogs, sushi and southern eclectic food.
If you are looking for national chain fast food restaurants, you can find them in the Southport area but not downtown. Hardees, McDonalds and Quiznos can be found on the Southport-Supply Road and there is a Subway in Walmart in the Walmart Shopping Center.
At the foot of Howe Street, next to Lois Jane’s Riverside Inn, you will find Oliver's where it overlooks the confluence of the Intracoastal Waterway, the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the other seafood restaurants are located near or along the Old Southport Yacht Basin where you can enjoy spectacular water views with your meal and dine either indoors or al fresco. The newest of these is the Frying Pan Restaurant on W. Bay Street, which opened in July of 2012. This restaurant is raised on pilings providing wonderful views of Oak Island and Bald Head Island out toward the ocean. On Yacht Basin Drive you will find the Yacht Basin Provision Company, a local favorite with a Key West Atmosphere and Fishy Fishy Café, which offers two full bars and live music.
For lighter lunch fare, you can visit the Trolley Stop on S. Howe Street where the specialty is hot dogs. All their hot dogs have names – even the plain one is called Old Baldy. You can also choose from The Southport, The Battleship and more, each with its own special toppings. On N. Howe Street you will find Port City Java, a coffeehouse that also serves items like wraps, sandwiches and salads. You can stroll to the Dry Street Pub & Pizza Restaurant on N. Howe Street at E. Brown Street for homemade specialty pizza, sandwiches, delicious salads and desserts.
If your taste buds are set for tacos or tortillas, you can find Mexican restaurants in the Southport area. The San Felipe Restaurante Mexicano has two locations - one in the Live Oak Village Shopping Center and the second on N. Howe Street at the entrance to the WalMart shopping Center.
To satisfy you craving for Italian food you can visit Bella Cucina: Seafood ~ Pasta ~ Pizza on Southport-Supply Road next to the Hampton Inn or take Long Beach Road to Fish Factory Road SE; then take a left onto O’Quinn Boulevard to find Joseph's Italian Bistro located in South Harbour Village at the Marina.

If you want to stay on Oak Island, NC but you want to go out to eat, you will find a surprising number of choices. Among them are sub and sandwich shops, seafood, Thai, barbeque, Mexican, Japanese and fine food restaurants. If location is important to you, there are restaurants with ocean views as well as restaurants right on the beach. You don't even have to leave the island for breakfast, coffee or to find a bakery.
Russell's Place Restaurant serves breakfast and lunch and breakfast is served all day. At Little Bits, you can also eat either breakfast or a light lunch like hamburgers. The Oak Island Sub Shop offers dine in or take out options of their subs, salads and homemade soups. For barbeque, you can visit the Bar-B-Que House, which also serves breakfast. All four are located on E. Oak Island Drive.
Thai by The Sea will satisfy your taste for Thai food. If you are hungry for sushi you will find it at Kobe Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar. Both of these restaurants are located on E. Oak Island Drive as well.
For ocean views, there are two restaurants to consider. The Flying Fish is located adjacent to the Oak Island Pier on Ocean Drive and Island Way at the Ocean Crest Pier on E. Beach Drive. The Fish House Restaurant at the Blue Water Point Marina Resort, located at the west end of the island, overlooks the waterway.
Turtle Island Restaurant on E. Oak Island Drive is an excellent seafood restaurant. You might want to visit on Steam Night – every Wednesday night. You will also find Calabash style seafood, pasta, sandwiches and more.
Bald Head Island, NC Restaurants
On Bald Head Island, NC, the Maritime Market Cafe & Deli at 8 Maritime Way serves breakfast and lunch daily. Lunch items include sandwiches, wraps and pizza slices. You can also visit their Ice Cream Shoppe for special treats.
At Mojo's on the Harbor you can eat lunch and dinner while watching the arrivals and departures of the Bald Head Island Ferry from indoors or outdoors. Mojo’s specializes in seafood, serving shrimp, crabs and fish but you will find steak, pork and chicken as well on their eclectic menu. You can also eat gluten free at this restaurant.
The Bald Head Island Club is also open for lunch and dinner. The menu at this restaurant is seasonal, assuring you of the freshest ingredients. The chef prepares local and regional fish and garden fresh vegetables. The Grille overlooks the golf course. The Palms has a full bar and an outdoor terrace for dining. Membership is required for dining at the club.
